Wine of the week : Can blau, Montsant 2008

Here’s a hearty, full-bodied red with a generous mixture of blueberry, blackberry, savory, spicy, mineral and smoky aromas and flavors. It then finishes with grainy tannins, making it a fine companion for hearty meat stews. The wine is a blend of carignan , syrah and grenache from the Montsant region in Catalonia in northeastern Spain. This is rugged country, with old vineyards on steep slopes capable of producing intense, concentrated wines.

Jorge Ordoñez is the importer. He was at the forefront of searching out unique and delicious wines from throughout Spain at a time when virtually the only Spanish wine known to Americans was Rioja. When you see his logo on a bottle of Spanish wine, you know you’re in for a treat.

Available at Corner Wines, Goody Goody, La Cave Warehouse and Pogo’s Fine Wine and Spirits.
