Spanish rosé wines the stars of the US summer
In June, numerous US wine trade publications and wine experts published articles about the products that are set to be à la mode in the coming summer months. Rosé wines, traditionally eclipsed in the North American country by red and white wines, are expected to enjoy an important role over the summer period.
Consultant and blogger, Mary Gorman-McAdams, wine expert for the blog The Kitchn, has written an extensive article in which she establishes a classification or ranking system for rosé wines in which a third of the wines referenced are Spanish products from appellations such as Rioja, Campo de Borja, Jumilla, Vinos de la Tierra Castilla y León and Getariako Txacolina.
In addition, the growing popularity of rosé wines has also been covered by trade media outlets such as ‘Snooth’, the most popular wine search engine used by US consumers, which praised the quality of Rioja rosé wines in a recent article.
Rosé wine sales have maintained a steady demand in the US in recent years, cornering a market share of 11 percent of total consumption. Spain, together with France, Italy and Austria, ranks among the North American giant’s main suppliers, which is the setting for the Plan Made in / by Spain, an initiative carried out by the Spanish Foreign Trade Agency (ICEX)with the aim of boosting the international exposure of Spanish companies, products, brand names and services on the local market.
The US market is one of the priority targets for Spanish wines given its huge growth potential. Currently the US is the third most important country as regards Spanish wine sales by value and the sixth by volume, with an annual turnover of around €200 million.
