Bodegas Torres, chairman receives the Lifetime Achievement Award for his defence of sustainable practices.

This week, Miguel A. Torres received the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by prestigious UK magazine, The Drinks Business, in the 2nd edition of the Green Awards. The awards acknowledge the actions carried out by individuals and companies from the wine and spirits sector which benefit the use of environmentally sustainable techniques. As a result, the award given to Miguel A. Torres recognises a lifetime of commitment to the environment and a business philosophy which has placed the bodega among the ranks of the most outstanding wineries as regards the use of eco-friendly practices.

Bodegas Torres, already received the Green Company of the Year award in the 1st edition of the Drinks Business Green Awards de 2010, and in recent years has developed a comprehensive action program which aims to minimise the negative environmental impact caused by its activity. Some of the most important aspects of the program are its numerous initiatives to protect areas of outstanding natural beauty and endangered species, as well as the research carried out in the application of sustainable techniques in the bodega’s production processes.

The raison d’etre behind Bodegas Torres’ eco-friendly commitment lies in the company’s philosophy which is summed up in the slogan: “The more we take care of the land the better wines we make”. An idea which has been a major concern for the bodega throughout its history and one which takes on special significance in view of the effect of climate change on vineyards. The company’s president, Miguel A. Torres explained: “Climate change directly affects the vines and it can become dramatic if we don’t do anything to avoid it”.

The Torres brand name boasts an extension of 1,869 hectares of vineyards, spread over nine Spanish wine regions, Chile and California. Currently 72 percent of its turnover is generated on international markets, where it has presence in more than 140 countries. A figure it aims to increase via its recent penetration of the Chinese and Indian markets.
